Safety risk on iPad AT&T connection
10 Jun 2010
AT&T
has confessed that an Achilles heal in security has made the email
addresses of more than 100,000 Apple iPad users vulnerable to hacking
attacks.
Users who signed up for AT&T's 3G wireless internet service have
been affected by the iPad security issue.
The weak spot was discovered by hacker group Goatse Security, which
claimed that it could take out over 114,000 email addresses from
AT&T's website.
Hacking was possible through an insecure way the AT&T's website
would prompt iPad users when they log in to their AT&T accounts
through the gadget.
The site would 'remember' the email addresses of users based on unique
codes available in the SIM cards within the iPads. The hacking group
said it recovered email addresses of several important people from this
system, such as media personalities and government officials.
The group contacted the communication services firm and waited for the
weak spot to be fixed before announcing the information in public, a
representative said.
AT&T said the problem was fixed on Tuesday and that it would notify
the iPad users whose email addresses may have been accessed.
