HTC acquires mobile software firm

08 Jun 2010

Smartphones maker HTC has bought Abaxia, a Paris-based software developer, for an undisclosed sum.

Abaxia's software, used on over 25 million phones and 60 handset models, enables operators and manufacturers to provide a consistent mobile phone home screen.

While other phone makers like Vodafone, Orange, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson currently figure in Abaxia's customer list, HTC has not clarified whether it will continue to provide Abaxia products to its handset competitors.

HTC, in collaboration with Google's Android, has developed its own user interface, which will differentiate its phones from others using the operating system. The addition of Abaxia is expected to broaden HTC's software development capabilities.

Acquisition of important patents from Abaxia could help HTC negotiate during its legal battle with Apple. HTC was sued by Apple earlier this year with charges of violating the patents relevant to the iPhone's user interface.
