Firms 'don't trust software safety'

04 Jun 2010

More than half of IT professionals do not trust commercial software to fend off attacks from hackers, a study has revealed.

A total 56% of 300 computer sector workers polled said they believe the flaws could leave the software susceptible to being hacked.

An even greater proportion (83%) thought commercial software had security flaws of some kind - even if they were unlikely to be exploited - and said they are spending heavily on penetration and code testing of their IT resources.

While the testing can be an expensive process, the companies said it helps build security into their software installations and gives them peace of mind.

Despite the extra cash spent on in-house security, the study, by Fortify Software, found that 31% of those surveyed admitted to being victims of hackers.

As many as 50% of IT security professionals also admitted to hacking their own systems. Three-quarters of them said they did it to test the strength of their own network's defences, 13% were just having "fun" or did it out of curiosity and 3% have targeted their competition.
