Data protection boost planned by European Commission

27 May 2010

Improvement in laws protecting personal data and the reform of copyright laws have been outlined as aims of the European Commission.

The Commission, which wants to ensure hardware and software makers follow industry standards, has published a Digital Agenda which advocates a digital Single Market.

It said such a market would have several advantages including better internet trust and security.

Other advantages would be greater interoperability, faster internet access, added investment in research and development, enhancing digital literacy skills and inclusion, and applying information and communications technologies to address society's challenges.

"Europeans will not embrace technology they do not trust - they need to feel confident and safe online," said the EC in the recently published Agenda.

EC vice president for digital agenda Neelie Kroes said the body aims to maximise Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) potential to boost job creation, sustainability and social inclusion.
