Denver site hacked twice in a week

25 May 2010

Following two hacking incidents in a week, the website of the city and county of Denver, US, had to be taken down on Monday night.

The hackers replaced the home page of Denvergov.org with a green and black one that read: "VIRuS-Ra3ch was here. "W3 C4n't H4ck A4y Thing ~ But W3 H4ck Wh4t W3 W4nt & your Security Information Has Been Passed Off."

The message was removed before 9pm, and replaced with one that said: "The City and County of Denver's website is undergoing maintenance."

Eric Brown, a spokesman for the mayor's office, said the exact time of the incident and restoration of he site was not known.

The site was previously taken down for six hours on Thursday, at about 8am, after another incident. Mr Brown said it was not known if they were related cases.

Both of the attacks are being investigated by police in Denver. Hacking is considered a misdemeanour in Colorado when it causes less than $500 (£350) of damage, but is a serious crime if the damage is severe.
