US revealed as worst spam offender
04 May 2010
The US has been uncovered as the world's worst offender for generating internet spam, with the UK occupying ninth spot in the global list of nuisance email exporters.
A study from Sophos, carried out between January and March 2010, found that the UK contributed 3.1% of total world spam in that period - the same as Russia and Italy.
In top spot was the US, which creates 13.1% of the world's spam, with India in second place - contributing 7.3%.
While developing countries in Africa and Asia are often blamed for many of the world's phishing scams and cyber attacks, the figures reveal a different picture with many Western nations producing a huge amount of junk mail. The world's most populous country China came in 15th position.
Graham Cluley, a technology consultant at Sophos, said the survey had thrown up some interesting points and that China's lowly position in the list was surprising.
He said a string of cyber attacks emanating from the nation have given it a bad name and it is often looked upon as the launch pad of targeted attacks against foreign companies and government networks.
